Water Harvesting Systems for Desert Homes: A Practical Guide
Arizona averages just 8 inches of rain per year — but a well-designed rainwater harvesting system can capture thousands of gallons. Here's how we do it.
Water is the desert's most precious resource. With Arizona facing long-term drought conditions and municipal water rates increasing 5-8% annually, rainwater harvesting isn't just environmentally responsible — it's financially smart. Here's how we integrate water harvesting into every desert home we build.
How Much Water Can You Really Capture?
The math is surprisingly favorable. For every 1,000 square feet of roof area, one inch of rain yields approximately 600 gallons of water. A typical 4,000 sq ft home in Scottsdale (averaging 8.3 inches of rain) can capture nearly 20,000 gallons per year — enough to irrigate 2,000 sq ft of native xeriscape landscaping.
Active vs. Passive Harvesting
Passive Systems
Passive harvesting uses grading, swales, and berms to direct rainwater to landscaping and trees. It's the simplest and most cost-effective approach, typically adding just $2,000-$5,000 to a build. We incorporate passive harvesting into every home's site plan at no additional design cost.
Active Systems
Active systems collect roof runoff through gutters and downspouts into storage tanks or underground cisterns. Water is then pumped to irrigation systems with filtration. Costs range from $8,000-$25,000 depending on storage capacity and filtration level.
- 1,500-gallon above-ground tank: $3,500-$5,000 installed
- 5,000-gallon underground cistern: $12,000-$18,000 installed
- 10,000-gallon underground cistern: $20,000-$30,000 installed
- First-flush diverter and filtration: $800-$2,000
- Pump and distribution system: $1,500-$3,500
Arizona Regulations & Incentives
Arizona is one of the most rainwater-harvesting-friendly states in the country. Unlike Colorado and some other western states, Arizona places no restrictions on residential rainwater collection. Tucson even requires commercial properties to meet 50% of landscape water demand through harvesting. Several municipalities offer tax credits of $1,000-$2,500 for residential systems.
